Reproductive Health and Sexuality

One focal point of the dance4life school program is to improve students understanding of reproductive health, sexuality and rights.

Adolescence is a critical period in every person’s life. It is a time when young people discover themselves as individuals and establish life-long patterns for adult behaviours and relationships.

Unfortunately, many adolescents are not equipped with the needed information and skills to make responsible decisions. Many adolescents are uninformed or misinformed about the reproductive process, pregnancy and the risks associated with childbearing, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV and AIDS.

When lacking information, confidence and skills, young people may have decisions about sexual activity that can lead to seriously physical and psychological consequences.

Research reports have shown that adolescents who receive sexuality education are more likely to start sexual activity at an older age, use contraception and have fewer sexual partners. Thus, it is critically important to ensure that adolescents understand how the reproductive system functions; how STIs are contracted; what the consequences of unprotected sex are and what different methods of contraception are available and how they work.

Adolescents also need skills and confidence to apply their knowledge about reproduction, contraception and safe sex to their own lives. They need to develop self-esteem and a range of skills, from communication and decision making skills to assertiveness and negotiation skills, to cope with peer pressure, to discuss issues related to sexuality with their parents and other adults, to negotiate abstinence or safer sex with their partners and to seek out contraceptive services at clinics. Most importantly, they need supportive guidance and assistance from caring adults in order to translate their knowledge into safe, responsible and healthy behaviours.

In the dance4life school program all these issues are raised and we provide information on sexual and reproductive rights and life skills. T

• Access the best possible treatment for reproductive health, including reproductive health care services, contraceptive methods and treatments.
• Receive and share information related to sexuality, contraceptive methods, infection through sexual transmission, HIV / AIDS, etc...
• Choose their partner
• Decide to have sex or not
• Consent to marriage
• Decide whether to have children and time spent with children
• Enjoy a satisfying, and safe, sex life.

dance4life mobilizes people to implement these rights while emphasizing respect for human rights. This requires each individual to respect the rights of another.
